Raising the Standard for CO₂ Safety: Inside Urbanaut Brewing Co.

How LogiCO2 monitoring technology is helping create a safer brewery and taproom environment

CO₂ is an essential part of modern brewing, but it is also a gas that requires careful management.

At Urbanaut Brewing Co. in Auckland, New Zealand, CO₂ is used throughout the brewing process from fermentation and beer transfer through to canning and carbonation. With production areas, cool rooms, a taproom and public spaces operating within the same two-storey facility, Urbanaut recognised the importance of having greater visibility of CO₂ levels throughout the site.

The brewery has installed a comprehensive LogiCO2 gas monitoring and safety system, providing continuous monitoring, audible and visual alarms and additional protection across key areas of the facility.

A brewery with unique safety requirements

Urbanaut Brewing Co. occupies a 1,200m² facility in Auckland’s Kingsland. The site combines brewing, packaging, canning and cool storage with a taproom, burger kitchen, retail space and offices.

With approximately 30 employees and a busy public-facing taproom, the brewery needed to consider not only the safety of production staff but also visitors and hospitality employees.

CO₂ can be generated naturally during fermentation and is also used to transfer beer, purge oxygen from the canning line and carbonate finished beer. At Urbanaut, the gas is distributed to multiple points throughout the facility.

The LogiCO2 solution

Working with the Urbanaut team, LogiCO2 assessed the brewery’s layout and identified the areas where monitoring would provide the greatest level of protection.

The resulting system was designed specifically around the way Urbanaut operates, covering both production and public-facing areas.

The completed installation includes:

  • 6 CO₂ sensors
  • 2 oxygen sensors
  • 3 traffic-light alarm units
  • 10 horn and strobe units
  • 2 sniffer units
  • 1 power monitor
  • 1 automatic SMB CO₂ shut-off valve

The system provides CO₂ monitoring across brewing, canning, production and access areas, with additional O₂ sensors positioned around the cool rooms.

Real-time monitoring and alerts

The LogiCO2 monitoring system provides staff with clear information about gas levels and system status.

Traffic-light indicators provide a visual indication of conditions, while horn and strobe units provide audible and visual alerts when defined alarm thresholds are reached.

At the highest alarm level, the SMB shut-off valve can automatically close the gas supply to the building, providing an additional safety measure without relying on someone being physically present to activate the shut-off.

The LogiCO2 Sniffer units also connect to the LogiCO2 Sniffer App via Bluetooth, allowing staff and service personnel to view readings, check sensors and review alarm and fault status from a mobile device.

Designed around the way the brewery operates

The LogiCO2 system was designed around Urbanaut’s unique two-floor layout.

On the lower floor, monitoring covers storage areas, offices, staff areas, the canning area and two cool rooms. On the upper floor, the system covers the bar, retail area, seating, kitchen, brew house and fermentation tank area.

The central unit and monitoring equipment were positioned near the bar and retail area, allowing staff to check the system status before entering operational areas.

The installation was completed over approximately three to four weeks while Urbanaut continued operating at full production capacity, demonstrating how a tailored LogiCO2 solution can be integrated into an active brewery environment.

More than monitoring

The benefits of the LogiCO2 system extend beyond safety monitoring.

The data generated by the system can also help Urbanaut identify potential CO₂ leaks and operational inefficiencies that may otherwise go unnoticed.

For a brewery where CO₂ is an essential part of daily operations, having greater visibility of gas levels can support a more informed approach to site safety and gas management.

Putting CO₂ safety on the agenda

Following the installation, CO₂ safety became a standing topic at Urbanaut’s bi-monthly health and safety meetings.

The project highlights the importance of considering CO₂ monitoring as part of the overall safety strategy for breweries and other beverage production environments where CO₂ is regularly used or generated.
